High school music directors often find themselves in a dilemma. In choosing a solo for a young saxophonist who is attending solo/ensemble for the first time, or auditioning for a regional honor band, music directors who are not saxophonists themselves don't know where to start. Sometimes, based on the recommendation of other directors, they will assign something entirely too difficult for their solo. I have prepared the following page to aid the selection of literature for the young saxophonist.

It should be also stated that even though a student can handle a more difficult literature over a longer time period, choose something that gives them more immediate success. This will actually help their growth! Positive results sooner will lead to more desire and a stronger work ethic, so that when it is time to assign the more difficult pieces they will be ready, mentally.
